In 1881, the 75th (Stirlingshire) Regiment of Foot was re-styled as 1st Battalion Gordon Highlanders

Medal Verification: The medal to Colour-Sergeant John Ibbotson, is confirmed as entitled, and the recipient's only medal awarded to him during his more then 20 years service with the British Army (his extant service papers held at The National Archives refer).

John Ibbotson, was a native of Stillingfleet, Yorkshire, England, where he was born circa 1839 . On 19 December 1857, at the age of 18 years and, described as employed as a 'Gentleman's Servant' attested for service with the British Army, at, York, England. On enlistment he was posted to his local infantry regiment, 51st (2nd Yorkshire, West Riding, The King's Own Light Infantry) Regiment. On, 1 December 1861, John transferred to the 75th (Stirlingshire) Regiment of Foot, with which regiment he remained for the rest of his long military career. By the time he took his final discharge from the British Army at Aldershot, Hampshire, England on 24 December 1878, Colour Sergeant John Ibbotson of the 75th (Stirlingshire) Regiment of Foot had served a total of 21 years 6 days reckonable time towards pension. At discharge his military character and conduct were described as 'Very Good' his name only once ever appearing in the regimental defaulters book, and never having been tried by court martial. John had served extensively overseas (9 years 240 days) across the British Empire, as under:

- East Indies: 1 year 260 days
- Gibraltar: 1year 170 days
- China (Hong Kong): 299 days
- Singapore: 2 years 20 days
- Cape of Good Hope: 3 years 221 days

At discharge, John Ibbotson, indicated that his future place of residence was to be Pontefract, Yorkshire, England
