The recipient, John Weir Bartle (1944-2024), was a native of Stirling, Scotland where he was born in 1944, and is recorded to have died in Balfron, Stirlingshire, Scotland, in 2024.

Service Dress Uniform, wearing Kilt, Sporran, Glengarry and insignia of the Argylls and Highland Division, taken at his 'Passing Out' parade at Bridge of Don Barracks, Aberdeen, Scotland in 1965, were published together with articles in two Scottish newspapers, viz the Sunday Mail of 25 April 1965 & The Press and Journal issue of 26 April 1965

1st Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders - the direct descendent unit of the immortal 'Thin Red Line' of Crimean War fame, served in South Asia between 1964 -1966. With regimental Headquarters at 'Selarang Barracks', Singapore, the battalion deployed on three operational tours of Borneo, as under:

- 1st tour: Apr - Sep 1964
- 2nd tour: Feb - Jun 1965
- 3rd tour: Nov 1965 - Apr 1966
