In the early 20th century it was the practise that Mountain Batteries, as well as Field, Medium and Light Battery's, of the 'British Army in India' included Indian soldiers who had been locally enlisted and trained in India for service with Royal Artillery units as 'Drivers'. When the British Army Artillery units returned to the United Kingdom after their tour of duty in India, the Indian 'Drivers' remained in India to be posted to other incoming British artillery units
