The recipient Karam Dad was by ethnicity and faith a Punjabi Mussalman soldier serving as a Sepoy (Private) with the 28th Punjabis an infantry regiment of the British Indian Army
During the Great War 28th Punjabis served in India, Ceylon Colony, Mesopotamia and Egypt, and raised a second battalion 2/28th Punjabis that served in India. In 1922, the regiment was re-styled as 4th Battalion 15th Punjab Regiment, which unit during the Second World War earned a well deserved reputation for its fighting prowess, with no less than 2 x Victoria Crosses being awarded to Sikh members of the battalion, viz Lieutenant Karamjeet Singh Judge (posthumously) and Naik Gian Singh
