The recipient Divaka Singh was a Rajputana Rajput of the Hindu faith holding the rank of Naik (Corporal) while serving with the 11th Rajputs an infantry regiment of the Bengal Presidency Army

In 1922 the 11th Rajputs were restyled as 5th Battalion 7th Rajput Regiment of the British Indian Army. In August 1945, 7 Rajput, dropped the numeric prefix, and simply became the Rajput Regiment. In 2025, the descendent unit of 5/Rajput continues to thrive as 5/Rajput in the Indian Army
