Michael Gaffney was a native of Ballymore, County Westmeath, Ireland, and by trade a 'Farmer' when he was recruited by Captain Grange of the HEIC, at Dublin, Ireland, on 17 March 1853, and where he was'attested' on 18 March 1853. Michael 'claimed' to be 23 years of age, and was described as 5 feet & 10.5 inches in height, with grey eyes & brown hair. He was contracted for 12 years service, and joined the Depot HEIC in England, on. 31 March 1853. Michael Gaffney sailed from England for India, when on 30 September 1853 he embarked aboard 'The Ascendant'
Reference records of the soldiers of the Bombay Army held at The British Library,see L/MIL/12/113, it is recorded that Michael Gaffney held the regimental number '2919' and served with the 2nd Troop Horse Brigade of the Bombay Artillery (of the HEIC Bombay Presidency Army)
