The Finnish Medal of Freedom, officially known as the War of Independence Commemorative Medal, was instituted on 10 September 1918 by the Finnish Senate. It was awarded for participation in the Finnish Civil War (also known as the War of Liberation) aimed at securing Finland's independence from Russia. The medal was awarded to both Finnish and foreign recipients for their contributions to this cause
