Reference 'British Gallantry Awards' (Abbott & Tamplin, 1981), an estimated 4061 x D.S.M.'s were awarded to British, British Empire and Dominion naval forces during the years of the reign of George V, 1914-1936 (inc). The decoration was also awarded to allied naval personnel in significant numbers (1461 x awards to allies has been suggested)
