The recipient was an Irishman who served in the South African War with 12th Company Royal Engineers

Medal and clasps verification: The medal with all 6 x clasps to Sapper Gallagher, is confirmed as entitled per the respective campaign medal roll of the 12th Company Royal Engineers (ref WO 100/156) that was compiled and signed in South Africa. The latter medal roll entry with remark 'To England 22.06.01'

Thomas Joseph Gallagher, son of John Gallagher, was a native of, Dunkerrin, Roscrea, Kings County (now called Offaly), Ireland, where he was born in 1866. By profession a 'Carpenter' he was 24 years and 9 months of age, when he enlisted in the British Army, at, London, England,  on, 20 March 1891. Thomas subsequently served a total of 12 years with the British Army, By the time he took his discharge from the British Army on 19 March 1903, most of his service had been spent overseas, including active service during the South African War.
