William John Thomas Hurst, eldest son of William Thomas Hurst (a Market Garden Labourer) & Dora Louise Hurst (nee Boxall) was a native of, Shoreham, Sussex, England, where he was bon in 1891, and where he was baptized on 19 July 1891

During the Great War William J. Hurst served with the British Expeditionary Force in France, and later with 10th Battalion West Riding Regiment (Duke of Wellington's) in Italy - where he claims he was recommended for the award of an Italia Decoration by an officer of his regiment - the recipients service papers refer
