William Edward Mitchell, first entered theatre of war 'France' on 26 July 1915, at which time he was holding the regimental number GS/3368 and was serving with the 7th (Service) Battalion Royal West Kent Regiment - one of Kitchener's New Army Battalions. He disembarked at Le Havre, France, on 26/27 July 1915. Subsequently promoted Sergeant, William was evidently a very capable NCO as he was commissioned from the ranks on 5 November 1916, at which time he was appointed a 2nd Lieutenant and posted to the 2nd Battalion West Riding Regiment (Duke of Wellington's Regiment). While serving in France with 2/DWR, the respective battalion war diary makes mention that at some time he was assigned duty with a detachment of his battalion, on a 'Decauville Railway' (these were narrow-gauge or trench railways of which were widely in use with the French and British Armies in France during the Great War.)
