Andrew Holmes was a native of the parish of Barony, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Scotland, where he was born circa 1835. Andrew attested for the British Army at Glasgow, on 23 February 1853, on which date he was posted to the 71st Highlanders Regiment of Foot. At time of his enlistment he was 18 years of age, and described himself as having been a 'Baker' prior. In his subsequent military career, he racked up a total of 21 years and 39 days 'reckonable service towards pension' while 'Serving with the Colours', of which 17 years and 2 months - the majority of his service - was spent overseas as under;

- Canada: 1 years 3 months
- Crimea: 1 year 6 months
- East Indies: 7 years 4 months
- Mediterranean: 7 years 1 month

Andrew Holmes remained a 'Private' throughout his military career. He took his final discharge from the British Army on 29 June 1874, at which time he indicated that his intended place of future residence after leaving the army was to be:
