The recipient, was an Indian soldier of the Sikh faith, the rank & appointment of Havildar/Clerk (Sergeant/Clerk) while serving with the Bengal Engineer Group of the Royal Indian Engineers, of the British Indian Army

The Bengal Engineer Group was - and still is - one of 3 x Combat Engineer Groups of the Indian Army. The regimental centre is located at Roorkee Cantonment, Uttarakhand, India

 During the period of the qualification criteria for the clasp 'S. E. Asia 1945-46'', the recipient would have served either in either French Indochina (now Vietnam) or in Netherlands East Indies (Indonesia)

4 x Indian Infantry Divisions deployed to South East Asia in 1945, as under:

French Indochina (Vietnam):
