The recipient Kirpa Ram was an Indian of the Hind faith, serving as an attested Non-Combatant 'Follower' performing the trade of 'Barber' while serving with the war raised 2nd Battalion 50th Kumaon Rifles of the British Indian Army
2/50th Kumaon Rifles: Raised at Bareilly Cantonment in June 1918, comprised of two companies of Kumaoni Rajput; one company of Kumaoni Brahmins and one company of Garhwali Brahmins. 2/50th Kumon Rifles remained in British India and its only active service was on the North West Frontier of India. 2/50th Kumaon Rifles was disbanded in 1923
