Queens South Africa Medal 1899-1902. Silver issue with  2 x clasps 'Tugela Heights' & 'Relief of Ladysmith' (2042 Tpr: E. Ferguson. Natal Police)

Medal & Clasps Verification: Trooper  Ernest. Ferguson, Natal Police, is verified being entitled to the medal and both clasps per the respective campaign medal roll of the Natal Police (ref WO 100/261), compiled and signed at Pietermaritzburg on 8 September 1901. This being the medal exactly as issued to him off the medal roll of the Natal Police

Under the remarks in the same medal roll it is shown that Trooper Ferguson took his discharge from the Natal Police on 31 January 1901. The roll also has the remark showing that the recipient also subsequently served with the Scottish Horse

'Trooper Scout' Scottish Horse: The medal roll of the Scottish Horse (WO 100/268) records the recipient as having served as No 66 with rank of 'Trooper Scout' with the Scottish Horse. For his service in the Scottish Horse he earned a further 2 x clasps, viz 'Transval' & 'South Africa 1901'. The Scottish Horse medal roll showing that he took his discharge form the Scottish Horse on, 9 August 1901. There are 2 x entries for Ernst Ferguson on the Scottish Horse medal roll, one for the clasp 'Transvaal' and the other for 'South Africa 1901'. The roll has notes showing that his QSA medal with the first 2 clasps was issued to him off the medal roll of the Natal Police, and that the latter clasp(s) for his service with the Scottish Horse was sent to him on 24/06/09

Reference 'British Army Local Armed Forces Enrolments Forms, Anglo Boer War 1899-1902', the recipient was Ernest Ferguson, who was born in 1874, and was 27 years of age when he enlisted in the 1st Battalion Scottish Horse, at, Durban, South Africa on, 6 February 1901. His height was a strapping 5 foot & 11 inches, and described as having brown eye's and auburn (redish) hair. For his next of kin he gave a female relatives address vis, Miss Shaw, whose address was given as The Lawn, Belturbet, County Cavan, Ireland
