Egypt (Khedivate): Khedives Sudan Medal 1896-1908. Silver issue with 13 x clasps 'Firket', 'Hafir' 'Abu Hamed', 'Sudan 1897', 'The Atbara ','Khartoum', 'Gedaref', 'Gedid', 'Sudan 1899', 'Jerok', Nyam Nyam', 'Katfia' & 'Nyima'
Un-named and un-attributed
The medal fitted with a long length of clean bright, silk moire riband
An extremely rare multi-clasp medal. All clasps equally riveted, the medal & clasps all equally toned, and a magnificent example
Medal rolls for the Khedives Sudan Medal awarded to the Egyptian Army, are not in the public domain, and while no one single unit of the Egyptian Army qualified as a unit for more than 12 clasps (the Xth Sudanese Battalion was the only battalion to qualify for 12 x clasps) , it would be possible for a recipient to have earned 13 x clasps by transfer or attached service on the Staff, or with another regiment. Apart from a handful of British Officers, serving on attachment with the Egyptian Army, the overwhelming majority of all multi-clasp (i.e., recipients of 6 or more clasps), were - of course - Egyptian Army personnel
At least one British Officer Major S. K. Flint, O.B.E., Royal Fusiliers, is recorded to have earned and wore the medal with 10 clasps
The first nine clasps represent chronological service during the 'Reconquest of the Sudan' (1896-1899) and latter four clasps are for service in punitive expeditions associated with the 'Pacification of the Sudan' (1900-1908). 'Nyima' was an expedition mounted in 1908, and was the final clasp to be issued with this medal
In total 15 x different clasps were authorised for award with this medal - the only 2 x clasps not represented on this example being 'Bhar-El-Ghazal 1900-02' & 'Talodi'
A most impressive multi-clasp medal
