Medal(s) & Clasp(s) Verification: The recipient Francis Lassere is confirmed entitled to both the medal and clasp per the respective campaign medal roll of the British South Africa Police (reference the searchable transcribed medal roll accessible on-line at the website www.angloboerwar.com. He subsequently served in the South African War, with the Durban Light Infantry and later Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry which service he was entitled to the Queen's South Africa Medal with clasps, Cape Colony, Orange Free State, Transvaal & South Africa 1901 (reference the respective QSA medal rolls, vis WO 100/260 & WO 100/277 )
Reference 'British Battles & Medals' (Spink, seventh edition 2006), the British South Africa Police were awarded an estimated 782 x 'Rhodesia 1896' medals. In the following 'Mashonaland 1897' there were an estimated 688 x members of the B.S.A.P. present, most of which, like Trooper Lassere had prior served and awarded the BSA Company medal with Rhodesia 1896 reverse, and received the clasp 'Mashonaland 1897' for their latter services
In total only and estimated 1170 x B.S.A. Company medals with the Rhodesia 1896 reverse and Mashonaland 1897 clasp, were issued to all units and individuals who served in both campaigns
Per the extant 'British Army Local Armed Forces Enrolments Forms, Anglo Boer War 1899-1902', the recipient Francis 'Frank' Thomas Lassere, served during the South African War. Firstly as No. 687 with rank Corporal in the Durban Light Infantry in which unit he served for 6 x months prior to taking his discharge at his own request on, 5 June 1900. Frank then subsequently served with Thorneycroft's Mounted Infantry, which unit he enlisted for at Durban, Natal Colony, on 3 December 1900, and in which unit he held regimental number 60821 and the rank of Trooper
