Punjab Medal 1848-49. No clasp (Asst. Surgn. N. S. Smith, 29th Bengal N.I.)
Nicholas Skottowe Smith, son of William Smith and Eliza Anne Smith (nee Smith), was a native of Passage West, Cork, Co. Cork, Ireland, where he was born on, 2 November 1820. Nicholas was appointed a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons (or M.R.C.S.) in 1843, and on 19 May 1853, was appointed an Assistant Surgeon in the Bengal Army of the Honourable East India Company
During his service with the Bengal Army, Assistant Surgeon Nicholas S. Smith served with the below following European and Native infantry regiments:
- 1st Battalion Bengal Fusiliers: From 1 October 1845
- 29th Regiment of Native Infantry: From 22 May 1848
In 1848 the 29th Regiment of Native Infantry - which regiment had been raised in 1797 as the 'Cullenjun-ka-Pultun' and carried the battle honour 'Delhi' (earned as 2nd Battalion 14th Regiment) - was based at Hajepoore where it had arrived on 25th January 1848, with detachments located at Noorpore and at Puthan Kote 
Nicholas Skottowe Smith returned to Ireland circa, and is recorded to have died at Passage West, Cork, Ireland on 19 May 1853. At the time of his death he was recorded as being late of the 3rd Regiment of Native Infantry
