John Herbert Amherst, son of John Charles Amherst (a Railway Clerk) and Lily Avis Amherst (nee Hallam) was a native of Ilkeston, Derbyshire, England, where he was born on, 27 September 1902. The 1939 National Register of England records John married to Florence E Amherst, and was employed as a Motor Tester - as well as serving as a Special Constable with the Birmingham Special Constabulary Reserve - the couple then residing at, 14 George Arthur Road, Saltley, Birmingham
