On the outbreak of the Great War in August 1914, the Queen's Own Yorkshire Dragoons, had its Headquarters located at Doncaster, Yorkshire, England, and comprised 4 x Squadrons that were located at:

- A Squadron at Sheffield
- B Squadron at Wakefield
- C Squadron at Doncaster
- D Squadron at Huddersfield

The regiment raised another two battalions during the Great War, but only the 1/1st Yorkshire Dragoons (Queen's Own) served overseas in any theatre of war, where it's respective squadrons served variously with the British Expeditionary Force in France and Flanders

Private William Burnett did not land in France prior to 1 January 1916, and did not thus qualify for a 1914-15 Star (his MIC only shows entitlement & issue of a Great War pair)

Both medals retaining their original clean long lengths of silk moire riband
