The Gayo-Alas Expedition (Gajo- en Alaslanden Expeditie) of 1904 was led by Colonel G. C. E. van Daalen of the Korps Marechaussee te Voet. The punitive expedition was carried out in the Gayo and Alas regions in the
highland areas of Atjeh, Sumatra, Indonesia. The expedition was notorious for the excessive loss of life inflicted on the local population. It has been estimated that 3,000 insurgents and villagers, including women and children, were killed during military actions by the Marechausse in May-June 1904
