The recipient was a British resident, who held the rank of 1st Class Police Inspector (Reserve) in the Kenya Police, while serving during the Mau Mau Rebellion in Kenya Colony

The recipient is recorded to have arrived in Kenya Colony in 1952 (UK Immigration / Passenger Shipping Manifests held at TNA refer), where he was employed with the Colonial Government's Ministry of Education as an Education Officer. Post independence John remained many years in Kenya as an education officer. His services were recognised in later years with the award of an M.B.E., and promotion to the award of an O.B.E., per the awards published in the below cited editions of the London Gazette:

John Michael Wood, son of William Wood and Hylda Wood (nee Anfield) was a native of Yorkshire, England, where he was born on 10 January 1928. At the time of the compilation of National Register in 1939, John was living with his mother (described as employed as a Milliner) (Shop Keeper)) and elder sister Hylda Mary Wood (born 1923) at their residence located at, 14 St Olaves Road, York, York C.B., Yorkshire (West Riding), England. John was registered as having died at York, Yorkshire, England, during the first quarter of 2006
