Solah Punjab). Prior to 1922, 3/16 Punjab had been styled '33rd Punjabis'. On the creation of the new 16th Punjab Regiment in 1922, a new regimental numbering sequence was introduced and awarded sequentially to those who had prior served in 33rd Punjabis, and to those newly enlisting into the British Indian Army and being posted to 3/16 Punjab

During the Second World War 3/16 Punjab served in India, Malaya and was captured at the surrender of Singapore Colony on 15 February 1942. The battalion was reconstituted in May 1946 at which time it was amalgamated with the war-raised 6/16 Punjab. At partition British India, in August 1947, the 16th Punjab Regiment was allocated to the Pakistan Army
