Edwin Miller was a native of the parish of St. Mary's, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire, England where he was born circa 1829. By trade a 'Labourer', Edwin claimed to be 25 years & 9 months of age when attested for the British Army at Newark, England, on 25 June 1855. Posted to the Royal Regiment of Artillery, his record of subsequent overseas service included:
- China: 6 x weeks
- East Indies: 4 years 7 months
Edwin's extant service papers - that are held and accessible at The National Archives - record that he claimed 'Prize Money for Lucknow'. Edwin took his discharge from the British Army on 17 June 1862, due to being found 'Medically unfit for military service. His character at discharge was described as having been 'Very Good', and had never been tried for court martial but that his name had appeared once in the 'Defaulters Book'. At discharge he had served He had 6 years 362 days with the Royal Regiment of Artillery. His future intended place of residence was shown at his home town of Nottingham
