Maralinga is a remote region located in the Great Victoria Desert of South Australia, approximately 800 kilometres (500 miles) northwest of Adelaide. It is part of the Woomera Prohibited Area and is situated about 516 km northwest of Ceduna, noted for being the site of British nuclear tests conducted between 1956 and 1963

Ralph Garnett Halliday, son of George Halliday (an Iron Turner) and Hilda Halliday (nee Garnett) was a native of Bingley, Yorkshire, England, where he was born, 23 July 1930. Ralph enlisted in the British Army in 1948 and was posted to the Royal Army Pay Corps. He was promoted Staff Quartermaster Sergeant on 1 February 1965, and was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal on 3 November 1966. Promoted Staff Sergeant Major on 2 March 1969, he was discharged on 23 January 1973 and died in York, England, 19 January 1997
