Sierra Leone General Service Medal (Instituted 1956)
A Royal Mint (United Kingdom) struck medal
The medal was instituted for award to Sierra Leone Colony armed forces, per Defence Council Instruction 25 of 1956
The medal became obsolete in 1971 when Sierra Leone became a republic
United Kingdom Armed Forces personnel were entitled to receive and wear the medal in British uniform
A clasp 'Congo' was instituted for award to those deployed on active service in the Congo anytime 26 January 1962 and 28 February 1963, including British personnel seconded to the Royal Sierra Leone Military Forces
Royal Mint records indicate that 500 x medals were struck and delivered
How many medals were awarded with the clasp 'Congo' is not known, and while the medal is scarce, the medal with clasp 'Congo' is extremely rare
The medal fitted with its original riband, that is suspended from a mounting bar that retains its long hinged pin & clasp fittings as issued
A choice example of a scarce seen Commonwealth campaign medal, virtually pristine
