John Arthur Macrae son of John Eric Macrae (a Scottish 'Reverend', who was a native of Fettercairn, Kincardineshire, Scotland), and Ethelwyn Macrae (nee Simpson) was born in Manchester, Lancashire, England, on 2 October 1904, and where he was baptized at the Parish of St. Clement, Ordsall-in-Salford, Lancashire, England on, 2 November 1904. Prior to leaving in July 1949, presumably, Lt-Col Macrae, had been serving in India on attachment to the Indian Army

After taking his retirement from the Britih Army in the 1950's, John returned to his Scottish paternal roots, and prior to 7 March 1958, had been living in retirement at.
