For gallant and distinguished services in the Middle East during the period November 1941 to April 1942’

Unquote.

The recipients unique army number is from the block 185476-195475 that was allocated to the Head Quarters Officer Commanding Pieter Maritzburg for issuance to local enlistments

The medals are all officially impressed South African issues struck at the Pretoria Mint

The recipient, Kenneth Grant Campbell was a South African soldier who by paternal decent was of Scottish ethnicity. He served with the Union Defence Forces on operations against Italian forces in Abyssinia and Somaliland, and against Axis forces in North Africa, and was Mentioned in Despatches for his ‘gallant and distinguished services in the Middle East during the period November 1941 to April 1942’

The absence of any Defence Medal in the group likely indicates a South African soldier who was either wounded in theatre, and or was otherwise returned to the Union of South Africa medically unfit for further military service

The medals are mounted as-worn by the recipient. The ribands suspended from a white metal mounting bar that retains its long hinged pin and clasp fittings
