3rd Regiment of South African Mounted Riflemen: The national South African Police was established in 1913, and comprised two formations, the South African Police, and a mounted branch of 5 x battalions of South African Mounted Riflemen, the SAMR being allocated to 5 x separate regional areas. 3rd SAMR had its Headquarters located at Dundee, Natal Province, and comprised of mostly former Caucasian members of the Natal Police. The regional scope and responsibility of 3rd SAMR was rural Natal, and a few posts in the Eastern Orange Free State along the Basutoland border
