Wilfred Sweet was born in Woodstock, Cape Town, South Africa, and having attested for the South African Medical Corps served with them during the Great War in German South-West Africa, 1914-15, and then on attachment to the Royal Army Medical Corps in Salonika, 1916-18; he saw further service in South Africa with the South African Medical Corps during the Second World War. Appointed a Serving Brother of the Order of St John in January 1959 (London Gazette 13 January 1959), he was advanced to an Officer of the Order in June 1963 whilst serving as Assistant Commissioner of the Cape of Good Hope District, St. John Ambulance Brigade. He retired in June 1965
