In July 1953, 1st Battalion, The Prince of Wales's Own (West Yorkshire Regiment) deployed to Malaya for active service during the 'Emergency', where they served with 18th Infantry Brigade. During it's service in Malaya ,1/West Yorks, is credited with having killed 21 x 'Bandits', and suffered 8 x casualties. 1/West Yorks served in theatre through end of March 1955, when they embarked for return to the United Kingdom - prior to leaving Malaya the battalion had based in Ipoh, having mostly been engaged in counter-insurgency operations throughout Perak State
