Great-War Under-Age Teenage Enlistment: When only 14 years of age, Robert John Gold-Spilsbury mis-declared his age, and enlisted in the British Army on 26 July 1915 on which date he was posted to the 2/9th Hants Cyclist Battalion, in which unit he was allocated the regimental number 1678, and held the rank 'Cyclist'. Many months later, only after his age mis-statement was detected, was he discharged from the British Army on, 2 June 1916. He never served overseas in the Great War and was not issued any medals in respect of his under-age service (First World War Service Records 'Burnt Documents' file series WO 363 held at The National Archives refers)

Royal Flying Corps / Royal Air Force Service: Undeterred by his 1916 'Underage' discharge from the British Army, on 3 October 1917, the plucky teenager - still only 16 years of age - next joined the Royal Flying Corps, under 'Boy Entrant' terms, for 'Duration of the War'. On enlistment into the RFC he was 16 years and 4 months of age, and held the rank of 'Boy'. Robert subsequently transferred to the Royal Air Force on 1 April 1918, in which service he held the service number 155025. Prior to the end of the Great War Robert was promoted to 'Boy Corporal' on 8 August 1918. He continued to serve in the Royal Air Force through to 30 April 1920 on which date he took his discharge

Four of the military prize medals are named to the recipient, with several showing his unit 42nd Field Service Coy RE, and all dating from the 1920s, three of the these have been drilled at 12 o’clock

What is known is that the recipient was awarded his LS&GC medal for 18 aggregate years service with 'The Colours' that would have been completed in. Additionally it is confirmed that Captain Robert John Gold-Spilsbury was issued a Defence & War Medal for his Second World service per below cited sources:

Robert John Gold-Spilsbury eldest son of Robert John Spilsbury (a Master Mariner) and Julia Spilsbury (nee Hitching) was a native of Parkstone, Dorset, England, where he was born on 18 May 1901.  and appears to have joined the Royal Artillery at the end of the Great War. More certain is the fact he enlisted in the Royal Engineers on 7 June 1920, at which time he was allocated the unique army number 1859961  in which he served in Egypt and was advanced to Warrant Officer Class I shortly after the outbreak of war. He was subsequently commissioned and attained the rank of Captain in November 1941 (Officer number 152386). When his Second World War medals were sent to him, his residence address was:
