When awarded his LS&GC medal for 18 years service with 'The Colours' John Ernest Harry Hawkins was holding the appointment of Warrant Officer II while serving with the Royal Engineers

Medals Verification: In addition to his LS&GC medal which is confirmed as entitled, the recipient was also entitled to a single British War Medal for his service overseas from the United Kingdom during the Great War in an area and capacity not subject to combat / active service

John Ernest Harry Hawkins, second son of Trafalgar Montague Hawkins (a Hairdresser) and Henrietta Hawkins (nee Colbourne) was a native of  Emsworth, Hampshire, England, where he was born on 16 February 1891. John's extant RE Index Card records that he enlisted in the British Army on 24 January 1910, on which date he was posted to the corps of Royal Engineers and given the regimental number 19805. He is recorded as holding the trade of 'Engine Driver' while serving with the corps. For his non-combat overseas service outside of the United Kingdom during the Great War he was entitled to the British War Medal. In 1920, he was allocated a new unique Army number 1852547. John is known to have served overseas in the Far East during the inter-war years, serving in Hong Kong Colony 1924-28 with 40th Fortress Company and the Establishment for Engineer Services (frequently abbreviated as E.E.S.) - this latter being the official designation for the branch of the Corps of Royal Engineers that managed the construction, repair, and maintenance of military infrastructure. It was while serving with the Engineering Services he was appointed a Mechanic Quarter-Master Sergeant. John Ernest Harry Hawkins took his final discharge from the British Army on 23 January 1931. He is recorded to have died at Gosport, Hampshire, England on, 15 October 1956
