During the South African War, 5th Battalion Royal Munster Fusiliers (Royal Limerick County Militia) departed the Strand Barracks
in Limerick for overseas service in April 1900. Initially 5/Munsters were stationed in Dover, England. On 14 February 1901, 5/Royal Munster Fusiliers arrived in Malta, from England, where men of the regiment were subsequently deployed for garrison duty across the islands of Malta & Gozo. On 29 September 1901 the 5th/Royal Munster Fusiliers, consisting of HQ Coy and 8 companies, 18 officers, 4 officers wives and 7 children, 1 warrant officer, 47 sergeants, 13 buglers, 415 rank and file, 16 soldier's wives and 30 children, embarked for Queenstown on the transport 'Assaye'. The men disembarked at Queenstown on 7/8 October 1901
