Note: Pte J. Finney served with 2nd North Staffordshire Regiment in the South African War - the only battalion to serve in South Africa, and to which all 'Volunteers / Militia ' drafts were subsequently attached - and is shown recorded in the South African medal rolls under 'both' his militia number '4194' & his 'Regular Army' 2nd Battalion regimental number 6091. The only other person with surname 'Finney' to serve with the regiment was a regular soldier No 3308 Private J. T. Finney
Joseph Finney was a native of Longton, Staffordshire, England. Prior to enlisting in his local Militia unit, 3rd (Militia) Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment at, Hanley, Staffordshire on 13 July 1896, Joseph had been employed as a 'Collier' in the employment of Mr, Robinson of Normacot, Staffordshire. At enlistment he claimed to be 18 years & 6 months of age. Joseph was allocated the 'Militia' regimental number 4194. His extant Militia service papers show that he had reported for regular annual service with his unit in successive year1896-99, and on 14 April 1900 was called -up for permanent service with the 2nd Battalion North Staffordshire Regiment, subsequently serving in South Africa 1900 - 1902 on active service during the South African War. He is recorded for having embarked for South Africa on 18 April 1900, and after the war was concluded he embarked for return home to the United Kingdom on 3 July 1902. During the Great War he served in France & Flander with 1st Battalion, North Staffordshire Regiment, from 10 September 1914. During the Great War ee was subsequently transferred to the West Yorkshire Regiment in which unit he was given the regimental number 31088. Joseph Finney's extant Medal Index Card records both regimental his respective regimental numbers
