A Magnificent 'Framed' maximum-issue campaign medal pair for the Second Afghan War 1878-80: Muleteer 5th Goorkha Regiment
- Afghan 1878-80. 'Peiwar Kotal' 'Charasia' 'Kabul' 'Kandahar' (Sepoy N**** ***** 5th Goorkha Reg)
- Kabul to Kandahar Star 1880: Muleteer Gool Mir 5th Goorkha Regt
Note: The medals are named to two different recipients who both served in the 5th Goorkha Regiment. The Second Afghan War Medal only, with usual contact wear, with rank and regiment clearly legible, but name mostly illegible. The Star with perfect naming
The medals professionally mounted in a large glazed frame, which in centre has a print of '5th Gurkha Rifles at the Battle of Peiwar Kotal 1878' by Vereker Hamilton - the original massive painting held on display at the National Army Museum, Chelsea, London. The frame assembled in 1996, with framers label to reverse
The 5th Goorkha Regiment (post 1922 titled 5th Royal Gurkha Rifles 'Frontier Force') was one of three regiments (the others were 2/GR & 4/GR) of the Gurkha line of the Indian Army to participate in the famous forced march between Kabul and Kandahar in 1880, and had the distinction of being the only Gurkha Regiment qualify as a regiment (bit not all personnel) for the Afghanistan War medal with a maximum issue of 4 x clasps
So distinguished and respected were the 5th Goorkha Regiment for their services throughout both phases of the second Afghan War - and especially their services at Peiwar Kotal in 1878 and later at the Asmaii Heights during the Battle of Kandahar in 1880 - that on being elevated to the peerage, Field Marshal Lord Roberts of Kandahar selected a rifleman of the 5th Goorkha's (together with a 72nd Highlander) as supporters on his coat of arms
A most desirable - and scarce seen - lot to a 5th Goorkha 'Muleteer'
Medals professionally mounted in the court-style, by 'Spink & Son Ltd, London'. Reverse of the mounting bar retaining its original stout long hinged pin & clasp fittings
