Hong Kong Colony: The Royal Hong Kong Police Commemorative Medal 1996 (A. R. Herniman, IP UI 27566)

The medal is named in honour of Andrew Robert Herniman, who held the rank of Inspector of Police and had the Unique Identification number 27566 (this latter was his defacto 'Warrant Number')

In 1996 the Royal Hong Kong Police Commemorative Medal 1844-1997 was approved by the Commissioner of the Royal Hong Kong Police and the colonial Hong Kong government. All original issues of this medal were struck by Spink & Son Ltd of London, and all were struck with English silver hallmarks. Medals were issued in silver (the majority) - and in silver-gilt (much less). Entitlement to the medal was open to all races who had qualifying service in the Hong Kong Police between 1844 and 1969 and to qualifying serving and former members of the Royal Hong Kong Police between 1969 and 1997. The medal was issued to mark the transfer of power from Hong Kong Colony, to the Self Autonomous Region of China in 1997, at which time the Royal Hong Kong Police, lost it's royal title.

Approval was granted by the RHKP for the medals, both full-size and miniature to be worn in dress uniform on the left breast below official medals (for full-size medal) and on the left lapel on mess-dress

Andrew Robert Herniman, only son of Frederick Robert George Herniman B.E.M., and Nell Herniman (nee Rabbage) was a native of Exter, Devon, England where he was born sometime during the second quarter of 1959. Andrew joined the Royal Hong Kong Police in which force he held the rank of Inspector. Andrew, while still a serving RHKP officer, married Jean Booth at Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, England on, 4 July1981 (a wedding photograph of the married couple was published in the Melton Mowbray Times and Vale of Belvoir Gazette issue of, 10 July 1981, in which Andrew is wearing the ceremonial uniform of the RHKP, with collar insignia and Sam Browne belt). Andrew Herniman , of 4 Le Marchant Close, Dunkeswell, Honiton, Devon, England, is recorded to have died on, 3 June 1994, at which time he was 35 years of age

Both the full-size medal and miniature medals here offered retain their original white-metal mounting bars, complete with hinged-pin& clasp fittings. The brooch bar on the full-size medal with makers marks 'Spink-London' mark
