Sudan Defence Force General Service Medal (Instituted 1933)

Obverse: The seal of the Governor General of the Sudan

Reverse: An eye catching representation of various types of native toops of the Sudan Defence Force including, infantry, camel corps and cavalry. The reverse design was inspired by the outstanding reverse design of the MacGregor Memorial Medal of the United Services Institute India (this latter being one of only two remaining medals from the era of the British Raj - and one of the most prestigious awards - that continues to be awarded in the Republic of India in the 21st Century - the other is the Murray-Lyon regimental 'Piping' medal of 4th Gorkha Rifles)

This British struck silver medal was established in 1933, during the joint colonial British-Egyptian Condominium, that governed Sudan between 1899-1955. The medal was awarded to members of the Sudan Defence Force and local Sudanese forces, in respect of various specified qualifying punitive expeditions, including active service in the Sudan and neighbouring territory during the Second World War

The SDF GSM was the first of a series of 4 x Sudan Defence Force medals (the others were the; Distinguished Service Medal; Officers Decoration and the Long Service and Good Conduct Medal - all of which were to be struck at The Royal Mint. The entire Sudan Defence Force series of medal designs was one of the most artistic / aesthetically pleasing of any medals struck for award in the British Empire during the 20th Century

A scarce medal to find in such good condition as the example here offered.
