The recipient Lindsay William Rodney Brown, an Officer of the Punjab Police, was a Great Grandson of Admiral of the White George Brydges Rodney, 1st Baron Rodney, KB (1718 – 24 May 1792)

Lindsay William Rodney Brown, first born child and eldest son of George Rodney Brown (who was born in Kandy, Ceylon Colony was 1st Lieut Bengal Horse Artillery, later Major-General, who died at Poona, in 1895 as Officiating General Officer, Bombay Presidency Command) & Isabella Brown (nee Cox) was a true 'Son of Empire', who was born at Peshawar Cantonment, then in Punjab Province, India (now in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan) on 13 February 1857, and where he was baptized on 15 March 1857. Lindsay, was the eldest of 4 x siblings, who were all 'India born'. Together with his younger brothers, Charles Rodney Brown (b. 02/11/1862) & George Rodney Brown (b. 21/11/1859,. all three brothers entered Cheltenham College, England, in January 1874. His younger sister was born at in. Lindsay was only briefly at Cheltenham College, as the school register records that he left Cheltenham in July 1874). At the time of his death, in the land of his birth, Lindsay was just 24 years of age - poignantly during his relatively short life, he had been on the North West Frontier during the year of the Great Mutiny and he died in the North West Frontier region the year following the conclusion of the Second Afghan War 1878-1880
