The envelope with post mark for London 8 January 1868, and reverse with post marks for Cork and date 10 January 1868 on front

Presumably Francis Jackson was the father of the late Nicholas Jackson, or another nominated next of kin of the late Sergeant Nicholas Jackson, Ordinance  Deaprtment

Died Aden Colony: The recipient Nicholas Jackson is recorded to have died at Aden Colony on, 4 July 1867, the cause of his death being 'Insolatis'  (a dated reference to 'Sunstroke'). Nicholas was buriend the next day, 5 July 1867, in Aden Colony. At the time of his death, Nicholas was serving as a 'Sergeant, Ordnance Department' and was 29 years of age

Nicholas Jackson was a native of Cork, Co. Cork, Ireland where he was born circa 1838. By trade a 'Jeweller' he is recorded to have enlisted in the Bengal Presidency Army of the Honourable East India Company at Cork, Ireland on 11 July 1856. His terms of contractual engagement was for 12 years. He sailed for India aboard the 'Minden', where on arrival in 1856, he was posted to the 1st Company 4th Battalion of the Bengal Artillery in which unit he was allocated the regiment number No. 8973 and held the rank of Gunner  (reference file series IOR/L/MIL/10/126 the registers of European Soldiers of the Bengal Army held at The British Library from the former collections of the India Office Library)
