The recipient's unique Army Number is from the block allocated to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in 1920, and awarded sequentially circa 1920-42  to all new enlistees to the British Army (regulars & territorials) who on their enslistment into the British Army were first posted to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers

The recipients entry from the RWF Enlistment Register confirms that John Arfon Hughes enlisted in the British Army on 8 January 1942, at which time he was posted to the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. His Tracer Card shows that he was transferred to the Cheshire Regiment from 22 June 1945, with which regiment he then served with the 2nd Battalion in Palestine during the State of Emergency that existed in there between 27 September 1945 - 30 June 1948
