Albert 'Norman' Brewis, eldest son of John Jeffrey Sheppard (an Engineers Pattern Maker, who in 1991 was employed by a Tyneside Shipbuilder & Gunmaker - almost certainly at the world-famous Elswick Works of Sir W G Armstrong, Whitworth & Co Ltd.) and Isabella Jane Brewis (nee Spires) was a native of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Northumberland, England, where he was born Brewis was born on 12 September 1902. At the time of the compilation of the National Census for England and Wales in 1911, 'Norman', described as a scholar, was living with his parents and 2 x younger siblings, sister Margaret Brewis (aged 6, who died in Devine, Medina, Texas, USA in 1974) and brother John Brewis (aged 1, who died in Brockville. Montreal, Canada in 2004) the family residing at, 42 Hampstead Road, Newcastle-on-Tyne

Albert 'Norman' Brewis  enlisted in the Dragoons of the Line at Newcastle on 2 February 1920. Posted as Trooper to the newly created 3rd Carabiniers, formed upon the amalgamation of the 3rd and 6th Dragoon Guards (Carabiniers), Brewis served in India from 1921-24, followed by a further 7 years at home. Discharged at Canterbury on 1 February 1932, his military conduct was given as ‘exemplary’: ‘A good, steady, reliable and sober man. Has been employed during the last fifteen months as a officer’s valet and has carried out his duties efficiently. Shoeing Smith before enlistment. Brewis later returned to service during the Second War with the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, Posted to North West Europe as Corporal from 28 August 1944 to 26 July 1945, he was discharged after 8 further years with the Colours on 12 September 1947, the last three months being spent with the R.A.S.C.. Albert married Dorothy Chapman at Colchester, Essex, England, sometime during the last quarter of 1927, and is recorded to have died at Colchester, during the second quarter of 1984
