The medal rolls show that Gunner Robert Herniman first entered a theatre of war, while holding the regimental number 1264 and rank of 'Gunner' while serving with a battery of the Royal Field Artillery (Territorial Force) of the Royal Regiment of Artillery. During the course of the Great War Robert was twice re-numbered, in sequence as No. 970930 and lastly as No. 133238. His rank remained the same throughout his service, vis, 'Gunner'

Robert Herniman, third son (and one of five children) of Richard Herniman (who in 1911 was a 'Rabbit Trapper' employer) and Selina Herniman (nee Harris), was a native of Chittlehampton, Devon, England, where he was born, 22 July 1891. At the time of the compilation of the 1911 National Census of England & Wales, Robert Herniman was employed as a 'Grocers Assistant' and was residing with his parents and 2 x sibling brothers at Nadder Cottage, South Molton, Devon. During 1913, Robert married Frances Isabella Northcroft, at Portland, Dorset, England. The couple were subsequently blessed with three children, vis; son Frederick Robert George Herniman born 05/04/1914; daughter Franceline Maud Herniman born 04/05/1920; and daughter Joan Herniman born 24/11/1921. At the time of the compilation of the 1939 National Register for England & Wales, Robert Herniman, was described as a 'Grocery Manager' at which time he was living with his wife and daughters at, 28 Lorne Road, Dorchester, Dorset, England. Robert Herniman died on September 1969, his death being registered at Weymouth, Dorset
