Instituted 6 April 1930. The Order of the Red Star was given to Red Army, Air Force & Navy personnel for exceptional service in the cause of the defence of the Soviet Union in both war and peace. Prior to the creation of specific long service awards in 1958, the Order of the Red Star could also be awarded for 15 years of meritorious and long service prior to the creation of specific long service medals in 1958
